Xiaoqinggan is suitable for long-term storage. As a combination of Pubei citrus peel and ripened Pu-erh tea, both possess high aging value. Well-crafted (such as through full sun-drying), high-quality Xiaoqinggan kept in a good storage environment can be stored for a long time, becoming more fragrant with age. After prolonged storage, the nature of Xiaoqinggan becomes milder, and the taste grows fuller and more rounded.

Since Xiaoqinggan is harvested while still immature, it has a certain natural bitterness and astringency. This necessitates a longer storage period to allow for the transformation of its internal substances, achieving a perfect fusion with the Pu-erh tea.

Three Core Elements of Scientific Storage

When storing Xiaoqinggan, strictly follow these three core principles: moisture prevention, light avoidance, and odor protection. As long as these three aspects are ensured, the quality of the tea will remain stable and undergo positive transformation.

1. Container Selection and Sealing

Sealed storage does not mean absolute vacuum; it refers to keeping the tea in a well-sealed container, such as a tin can or an aluminum foil bag, to create a relatively closed micro-environment.

Storage Steps:

  • Ensure the storage container is clean, odorless, and completely dry;
  • It is recommended to first place the Xiaoqinggan in an aluminum foil bag, exhaust some air, and put it at the bottom of the can;
  • Fill the rest of the can with Xiaoqinggan and tighten the lid.

2. The Delicate Balance of Oxygen

The post-transformation of Xiaoqinggan requires a trace amount of oxygen for oxidation reactions. An appropriate amount of oxygen promotes the deep fusion of the ripened tea and citrus peel aromas, making the tea soup more mellow and sweet. Therefore, preventing moisture is more important than pursuing an absolute vacuum.

3. Environmental Requirements

Place the stored containers in a cool, dry area such as a study or tea room. Strictly avoid direct sunlight and stay away from places with high humidity or odors, such as kitchens or bathrooms.

Summary of Storage Precautions

  1. Avoid Direct Air Exposure: Do not leave Xiaoqinggan exposed to the air for long periods;
  2. Strict Moisture Control: Keep away from high temperature and high humidity;
  3. Isolate Odors: The storage area must have fresh air without any strong odors;
  4. Prefer Tin Cans: For long-term storage, metal cans with good sealing properties are recommended;
  5. Do Not Refrigerate: Xiaoqinggan does not need refrigeration; a room temperature environment is best for its aging.

If you purchase ready-made canned products, restore them to their original state and seal them immediately after each use, then store them in a well-ventilated, dry, and shaded place.
